Q&A with Amal

What motivated you to become a nurse?

I have always been drawn to the healthcare field because of its unique opportunity to provide care and support during some of the most challenging times in people's lives. I began my nursing career by completing a nursing program, which provided me with a solid foundation in clinical skills and patient care. I always had a desire to help people.

What are some of your proudest moments in health care?

One of my proudest achievements was implementing a new patient care strategy in the psychiatric unit where I worked. I collaborated with other healthcare professionals to provide the best environment for the patients.

Also, as a travel nurse, I had the opportunity to work in various healthcare settings across the country. I took on different roles and responsibilities, from high-intensity urban hospitals to remote long-term care homes.

What qualities do you bring to your role at Pinnacle?

I have been an LPN since 2020 and bring specialized expertise in psychiatric and geriatric care, adaptability from travel nursing, and strong crisis management skills.

My effective communication, cultural competence, and commitment to continuous learning enhance patient outcomes and foster team collaboration. My leadership and mentorship experience also contribute to a supportive and dynamic healthcare environment.

What values influence your work?

My core values are compassion, integrity, and respect. Compassion drives my patient-centred care; integrity ensures ethical practices; and respect fosters a supportive environment for patients and colleagues.

These values guide my daily interactions, enhance patient outcomes, and promote a collaborative and trustworthy healthcare atmosphere.

What challenges do you face as a nurse? How do you overcome them?

One major challenge was working as a nurse during the pandemic, facing high stress and resource shortages. As a travel nurse, adapting quickly to new environments added complexity.

I overcame these challenges by maintaining flexibility, prioritizing self-care, and focusing on teamwork to ensure effective patient care and personal resilience. All experiences have shaped me well for every journey I seek in my nursing career!

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy fishing, badminton, and hiking. These hobbies help me unwind and stay active, and promote a healthy work-life balance. Fishing provides relaxation, badminton keeps me energized, and hiking connects me with nature, which all contribute to my overall well-being and resilience in the demanding healthcare field.

What do you find most rewarding about nursing?

Witnessing the impact of small gestures, like a resident's smile or shared laughter during work, is especially rewarding. These moments of connection and joy affirm the difference I make, and reinforce my commitment to compassionate care while highlighting the meaningful relationships built with patients.

What is your educational and professional background?

I graduated with a nursing degree in 2020, entering the field during the pandemic, which profoundly shaped my perspective. The challenges of working under crisis conditions taught me resilience and adaptability, while my experiences in psychiatric and geriatric care deepened my empathy and understanding.

This blend of training and real-world challenges has fostered a compassionate, patient-centred approach and a commitment to continuous learning and growth. Working in psychiatric and geriatric care, and as a travel nurse in long-term care facilities in Ladysmith, Courtney, and Nanaimo, deepened my adaptability and empathy.

What message do you hope readers will take away from your bio?

I hope readers see my commitment to compassionate, adaptable care, honed through diverse experiences including pandemic-era nursing and travel assignments. I aim to present myself as a dedicated, empathetic professional who prioritizes patient well-being, values strong connections with patients and colleagues, and is committed to continuous learning and excellence in healthcare.
