Krista MacDougall

LPN

During my time in healthcare, I have also learned that some patients don't feel comfortable advocating for themselves. In my role at Pinnacle I am empowered to be their advocate and voice. Witnessing the positive impact we make on our patients' lives is a constant source of inspiration for me.

Q&A with Krista

What motivated you to become a nurse?

From the time I was a child I have always enjoyed helping and taking care of people. It was something that came very natural to me.

What are some of your proudest moments in health care?

Some of my proudest moments include working with families during palliative/end of life care. It's not easy caring for a patient who is approaching end of life, but making sure they are as comfortable as possible, and being there to support their family/friends is very rewarding.

What qualities do you bring to your role at Pinnacle?

I have been an LPN for over 14 years. In that time I have worked in a number of different areas including long-term care, acute care, home care, and palliative care. I also have over 10 years experience working with dementia/Alzheimer's patients. I have a calm, caring personality and absolutely love working with seniors.

What values influence your work?

Ensuring each patient's dignity is respected, and helping them have as much independence as they can. Which is why I love working in my role with Pinnacle Plus!

I have a lot of compassion for each patient, and I hope that helps them to feel respected. I have learned that compassion and love is great medicine. Hugs release serotonin and dopamine the natural way and make people feel good!

What challenges do you face as a nurse? How do you overcome them?

I have learned to not tolerate disrespect, and to set boundaries. Like many others in my field, probably the biggest challenge in healthcare is overworking myself, and taking on too much overtime. I have learned to say no, so that I can show up for my patients as the best version of myself.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I have three beautiful children, a dog, and a cat. So life can feel pretty busy sometimes! My oldest son plays baseball, so we do a lot of travelling in the Spring and Summer with him. I am originally from PEI, and came to BC to travel and see the West Coast. I fell in love with Vancouver island, and have been here for over 20 years now. So we love to hike and swim, and get outside as much as we can! In my spare time I also like to do yoga and spend time gardening.

What do you find most rewarding about nursing?

When I get to see our patients remain living independently in their homes – and thrive! – with our support. Seeing their smiling faces each day when we come to visit them always makes my day.

What is your educational and professional background?

I graduated in 2010 with a diploma in Practical Nursing, and have also worked as an Aesthetician and an Administrative Assistant.

Having experience working in multiple different healthcare settings has really helped me understand the different stages of aging, and the level of care needed at each stage. It is a privilege to be in people's lives when they are at their most vulnerable.

What message do you hope readers will take away from your bio?

I hope readers feel confident in having me take care of their loved ones, and know they will be well looked after. I strive to ensure every patient can feel the level of compassion and empathy that I have for them.
