Pharmacists at Pinnacle Pharmacy and across BC now have the authority to prescribe medications for 21 minor ailments, plus contraception and emergency contraception.

This change means that if you don’t have a family physician or can’t wait for a doctor's appointment, your Pinnacle Pharmacy team is here to help write many common prescriptions!

Visiting a pharmacist can save you a trip to a walk-in clinic, urgent care, or even the emergency room, providing a more convenient option for your health needs.

Now that your pharmacist can write common prescriptions, you can:

Consultation Cost

We believe everyone deserves access to healthcare. Fortunately, most people can access the benefits of this service without any additional cost.

  • There is no cost for the consultation for patients enrolled in BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP).
  • Out-of-province visitors and residents without MSP pay a $20 fee.

What to Bring for Your Consultation

To make the most of your consultation, please bring along a few important pieces of information:

  • A list of any current medications you are taking, or the medications themselves.
  • Details about any allergies you may have.
  • Your BC Services Card or another form of identification to confirm your registration with MSP.

Being prepared with this information will help your pharmacist to make the best possible decisions regarding your health needs.

Follow-Up Consultations and Refills

After your visit, keep an eye on how you’re feeling and watch out for any side effects. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist or worsen, please reach out to your pharmacist for advice and support.

When it is time for a refill, your pharmacist will decide whether it is appropriate, which may require a follow-up consultation. We will discuss your treatment plan during your initial consultation, and provide clear steps on how to manage your medication moving forward.

Can you help me transfer my prescriptions to Pinnacle Pharmacy?

Yes! Prescription transfers are free, easy, and fast. All we require is your name and some basic info and we’ll take care of the rest for you.


Can my Pinnacle Pharmacist write prescriptions?

Yes! As of June 1st, 2023, your Pinnacle Pharmacists are now able prescribe for contraception and many minor ailments. Eligibility criteria and some limitations apply. You can learn more by clicking here, or just contact us to find out if you qualify.


Can you bill insurance plans for pharmacist-written prescriptions?

Yes. Just as with doctor-written prescriptions we are able to bill insurance plans as well for any pharmacist-written prescription.


Do I need to book a prescription consultation in advance?

While appointments are not strictly necessary, it’s recommended to call ahead to ensure availability and reduce wait times.


How long does a prescription consultation take?

A consultation usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of your needs and the discussion with your pharmacist.


Is there a cost for a prescription consultation?

For patients enrolled in BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP), there is no cost for the consultation. Out-of-province visitors can access this service for a nominal fee of $20. The patients is responsible for paying for the cost (or their portion of the cost) of the prescription itself, just as if their doctor had written it.


Can I receive prescriptions for conditions not listed?

No. However, if you have a condition outside the listed ailments, your pharmacist can still provide guidance and may refer you to a physician if necessary.


What types of medications can pharmacists prescribe?

Is there an age limit for pharmacist-initiated prescriptions?
